Harry Potter - Half Blood Prince Review

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince U.S. Cover

This is going to be a very short review of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. The book was an excellent read. Before taking up Half Blood Prince you'll want to have read the prior Potter books in the series.

Half Blood Prince definitely acts as a bridge between Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (book five), and the final book of the Potter Series - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. In fact I suspect that much of the material in Half Blood Prince was written at the same time Order of the Phoenix was being formulated. This is not to say that Half Blood Prince isn't a book unto itself, but it did leave me wondering how much J.K. Rowlings felt the need to fill, and expand plot and character just to hatch a sixth book.

Having said that I must say that Half Blood Prince did further the story of Harry and his Hogwart's family. The central expansion is that of the Dark Lord, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Much of the book is spent in the presentation of a collection of memories which Albus Dumbledore shares with Harry Potter in an attempt to educate Harry, and the reading audience as to the origin of Voldemort.

There are some excellent scenes in the book, but very little magical action. One of the main characters is killed, and Harry is assigned a quest which of course begins at the ending. Leaving readers wanting closure, wanting more.
